Gardening is a great hobby and retirement program; it works as a stress-buster and an anti-depressant. Many take up the hobby of urban organic gardening but very few continue with it due to high expectation. Gardening requires continuous care and attention with love and patience.

Mistakes are expected when we begin something new. Few common mistakes are mentioned below. It is shared by My Dream Garden with the hope that others will benefit from it.

1.Starting a garden with small containers or pots - Beginner start of initially with small containers or pots for experimenting purpose. With small containers or pots, initially plant can grow certain size and growth is stunted due to the spacing and aeration of roots. Magic Planter box and grow bags have a lot of planting space, helps roots to aerate and breath, which in turn helps the plants grow healthier, with sufficient space that will allow multiple plants to grow. There are an almost unlimited size for selection of pots and containers to choose from. However, you should avoid any container without drainage holes in the bottom so excess moisture won't build up in the soil. Small pots can also be a problem because they don't hold much soil and dry fast. The larger the size of the container you have, the better. Fruits and vegetables need plenty of soil to grow. It can sometimes be difficult to identify container size for plants. Most of the time we sow seeds in the wrong container.

2.Giving plants too little or too much Sunlight - This is one of the common gardening mistakes many make during the initial stages of their gardening journey. There are few reasons why sunlight affects the plant growth, sunlight is an essential requirement for the plants to photosynthesis to prepare food. If plants don’t receive sufficient amount of Sunlight, or placed where sunlight is inadequate. By placing plants were sufficient sunlight is not present, it affects growth rate. People living in Urban cities, finding a place to grow a garden is difficult. One is often tempted to buy ornamental plants that look beautiful, without much consideration for whether they will be suitable in balcony gardens. Different plants have different light requirements and one can easily choose the right location for them if we remember the requirement. Most of the fruit vegetable plants need a full day’s sun or, at the very least, 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight, leafy vegetables need atleast 3-4 hours of direct sunlight. South, east or west facing balconies, we can grow vegetables.

3.Soil or Growing Media - Choosing the correct soil is an important part of setting up a garden. Growing vegetable plants in pots, grow bags and planters need good drainage for healthy root growth. Plant containers like pots and grow bags need to have drainage hole. Best Soil for growing vegetables on balcony is Potting mix. Drainage and aeration are the reason why urban gardeners should opt potting mix instead of using only red soil. Learn more about how to choose potting soil by reading "What Is Potting mix and its constituents?" Attach link potting mix. Good potting mix is the key to success in urban gardens, because your plants are growing in a restricted nutrients and environment. Potting mix provides good drainage, plant nutrients, and be able to retain moisture during summers. A potting mix is based on organic compost mixed with cocopeat, red soil, vermicompost, and other nutrients.

4.Selection of plants for your balcony - Almost all vegetable, herbs, leafy vegetables can grow successfully in a container. Before purchasing plants for your balcony garden, plan your garden according to the duration of sunlight and space availability. Don’t simply purchase plants that you think looks beautiful which are sun lovers, and then expect it to live in your shady balcony garden. To keep your plants happy, feed them with organic nutrients. Your potting mix may also contain nutrients, but it's still at the growth stages it is good to supply extra nutrients as plant food.

5.Forgetting to water or improper watering - The most common mistake when it comes to urban garden watering is over or under watering the plants or forgetting to water. Overwatering Plants – When leaves turn yellow and fall off or the plant don’t bloom, it’s certain that the soil is staying too wet due to over watering.  Make sure your containers have drainage holes. Before you water, check if the soil is still moist by holding the soil in your hand to check for moisture content, water when the soil is dry. Under watering Plants – Balcony gardens need watering at least once a day during the summers and during winters check for the soil moisture content then water the plants.  Small pots and hanging pots may need water more often because there is less soil to retain moisture. If you’re on vacation install drip system, with automated watering system. So, you don’t forget to water or your garden is unattended.
